Summer Reading
Have Book, Will Travel
June 1 - July 31
Travel the world over this summer as you
have exciting adventures while reading
for fun and prizes. During the weeks of
June 24-30 and July 22-27, you can spin
the prize wheel if you have completed
your reading goals. Complete all of your
goals to choose a book from a selection
provided by the Friends of the Cary Area
Library, receive coupons for local eateries
and activities, and be entered into our
grand prize drawing for a one-year
Brookfield Zoo family pass. Last day to
register for Summer Reading is July 17.
Summer Reading Kick Off: Holly's Hawaii
Saturday, June 8, 10:30-11:15 am
All ages family program. Enjoy a virtual trip
to Hawaii with Holly Nagel, hula dancer and
storyteller extraordinaire! Holly will share
a Hawaiian folk story, then lead hands-on
playing of musical instruments, teach some
Hawaiian words and hula hand gestures
and, of course, dancing. Children from the
audience will be chosen to model Hawaiian
costumes and exotic feather headdresses! Registration is required.
Science Time with Nursery Rhymes
Wednesday, June 12, 6:30-7:30 pm
For ages 3-5 with an adult. Did you ever
think that nursery rhymes might be
science, too? Join us as we learn some
science connected to some familiar nursery
rhymes. Limited to 20.
Mother-Daughter Fairy Garden
Workshop
Saturday, June 15, 10:30-11:30 am
Ages 5-10 with an adult. Make your own
fairy garden with a plant professional
from the Barn Nursery. Register in person
to pay the $15 materials fee which covers
the container and plant materials for one
garden. Additional decorative items may
be purchased on the day of the program.
Once Upon a Time in India
Friday, June 28, 1-2:30 pm
Entering grades 1-5. Come learn the story
of The Ramayana, a famous story in Indian
culture. We'll talk about Indian culture,
Bollywood musicals, and learn some
dance steps from the movies. We'll finish
with a craft in honor of Raksha Bandhan,
a summer holiday dedicated to brothers,
sisters and special friends.
Limited to 15 kids.
World of Whale Sharks
Friday, July 12, 10:30-11:30 am
All ages family program, kids under 9 with
an adult. Join us on a virtual trip to Central
America as divers search for the largest
shark on the planet, the 40 foot long,
10,000 pound whale shark. Watch as
divers meet this giant of the sea up close
and personal. After the film, kids can touch
a 25 foot long inflatable model of this
monster fish.
RobotCity Workshop
Thursday, July 18, 10-10:45 am
Ages 4-7, parents welcome. This workshop
will offer an introduction to robotics
while working with a variety of hands-on
activities. Children will design their robots
with Bits and Bobs sets and learn how fullsize
robots are built. Registration required.
Limit of 25.
RobotCity Workshop
Thursday, July 18, 11am-Noon
Ages 8-12. This beginner robotics workshop
will feature a variety of hands-on
activities. Students will work with Snap
circuits sets to learn about a robot's "brain"
and how electronic components function
together, and with Gears to learn how robotic
movement is powered. Registration
required. Limit of 35.
Scottish Tales and Highland Games
Friday, July 26, 1-2:30 pm
Entering grades 1-5. We'll start indoors
with one of Scotland's legendary stories:
Tam Lin's capture by the fairies. Then we'll
go outside to play our own versions of
the famous Highland Games. We'll try the
caber toss, sheaf toss and a bit of
haggis hurling.
World of Music
Tuesday, July 30, 7-7:45 pm
Family program all ages,
children under 9 with
an adult. Guy Louis will
transport you around
the world by sharing
international music played
on exotic instruments.
Featured segments will
include music from diverse
cultures, native American
music, Renaissance Europe tunes,
African, and Indian music. Instruments
demonstrated will include the sitar,
tambourine, tablas and the modern
electric guitar.
